Sweden’s Port of KAPELLSKAR is pioneering auto mooring technology in the country, enhancing mooring efficiency and sustainability, according to port officials.
Located approximately 55 miles north of Stockholm, the Port of KAPELLSKAR serves as the region’s hub for ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off) operations. Its strategic location and robust land connections make it an ideal choice for this innovative project. The port has five berths, including berths for ferry operations to Estonia, the Åland Islands, and Finland.
The “Cavotec’s MoorMaster automated mooring technology” operates by physically fastening the ship to the dock using vacuum pads attached to the ship’s hull, completely eliminating the need for traditional mooring ropes. This innovative technology substantially decreases one of the port’s most hazardous tasks, which involves handling mooring ropes, thereby enhancing safety. Remarkably, the system can efficiently dock a ship within 30 seconds and undock it in a mere 15 seconds.
Additionally, the Port of KAPELLSKAR has introduced a cutting-edge crane known as the “PowerReach NxG.” Vessels utilize this crane to connect to shore power. This integration of new mooring technology enables ships to power down their engines earlier, leading to a significant reduction in emissions.
