The amount of cargo handled in Turkish ports decreased by 3.5 percent to 44 million 282 thousand tons in October compared to the same month of the previous year, while the amount of containers increased by 11.5 percent to 1 million 118 thousand TEU.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure announced container and cargo statistics for October.

Accordingly, the amount of cargo handled at ports in October decreased by 3.5 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, falling to 44 million 282 thousand tons.

In the January-October period, the cargo handled decreased by 4.1 percent compared to the same period last year, decreasing to 436 million 89 thousand tons.

In October, foreign trade transportation decreased by 1.5 percent compared to the same month of the previous year and reached 33 million 719 thousand tons.

Transit cargo transportation by sea decreased by 16.6 percent to 5 million 273 thousand tons. In the same month, the amount of cargo transported by cabotage decreased by 1.3 percent, with 5 million 290 thousand tons.

The highest load was handled in Kocaeli

The highest cargo handling in the month in question was at Kocaeli Regional Port Authority with 6 million 847 thousand tons, followed by Aliağa with 6 million 818 thousand tons and Iskenderun Regional Port Authority with 6 million 283 thousand tons.

In October, 6 million 677 thousand tons of “40-foot containers” were handled at the ports. 40′ full container became the type of cargo that showed the highest increase in handling amounts compared to the previous month, with an increase of 492 thousand 842 tons.

The most exported cargo type by sea was recorded as “portland cement”. It was calculated that the most imported cargo type in this way was crude oil.

The highest cargo handling in seaborne exports was carried out to Italy with 1 million 302 thousand tons. The highest cargo handling in imports was in transportation from Russia with 7 million 731 thousand tons. In October, the most handling was done in liquid bulk cargo with 13 million 407 thousand tons.

Most container handling goes to Egypt

The amount of containers handled at ports in October increased by 11.5 percent compared to the same month last year, reaching 1 million 118 thousand TEU.

In the January-October period, the amount of containers handled at ports increased by 1.3 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 10 million 487 thousand TEU.

The amount of containers handled for foreign trade increased by 10.2 percent compared to the same month last year, reaching 878 thousand 416 TEU.

The amount of containers handled in cabotage increased by 0.3 percent and reached 66 thousand 232 TEU. The highest container handling took place at Ambarlı Regional Port Authority with 261 thousand 963 TEU. This was followed by Kocaeli with 202 thousand 147 TEU and Mersin regional port authorities with 168 thousand 852 TEU.

Greece was recorded as the country with the most container handling with 121 thousand 744 TEU in October. The largest container load for export purposes was containers going to Egypt with 45 thousand 889 TEU. The highest number of container unloads for import purposes was from Greece with 64 thousand 775 TEU.
