the personnel of the ship, which was split in two due to the storm, told about their experiences

Azerbaijani Ümit Hasanov, one of the evacuated personnel of the ship that was dragged to the shore after breaking into two due to the storm in Zonguldak’s Karadeniz Ereğli district, shared his experiences.

Hasanov told journalists that the ship split in half and started to drift due to the storm, and that they were lucky to survive.

Explaining that if the ship had overturned, they would have remained in the water and not been able to get out, Hasanov said, “We immediately put on our diving suits. I went on the bridge and gave an SOS signal to the Naval Forces and Coast Guard. No one could have helped there, it was not possible. We were in a very difficult situation, but we survived.” he said.

When reminded that he shot a video to ask for help during the storm, Hasanov said:

“An accident does not say it is coming. We are lucky and survived. We are alive, thank God. We only heard the announcement of the ship sinking offshore. The ship broke in the middle, the other side broke away. We don’t know where it went. There was a very strong wind, I have never seen such a wave. There was a 12-meter wave. “I was at sea. I was on shift. We were at the helm, the ship broke in half. I shot the video so they could find us if we sank. I gave an SOS signal, the nearby ships heard it, but none of them could come to help. There was too much wind and waves. It didn’t happen. Then I put on my diving suit and helped the men.”

The Cameroonian flagged dry cargo ship anchored in Ereğli Port was split into two due to the storm that affected the region on November 19, and the part of the ship dragged to the shore hit the concrete walls of the port and damaged the amphitheater on the shore. 13 foreign national personnel on the ship were evacuated by the teams and placed in Ereğli Teachers’ Center.
