the second phase of discharging wastewater from the fukushima dai-i nuclear power plant into the ocean has begun.

The second phase of discharging radioactive processed wastewater accumulated at the Fukushima Dai-i-i Nuclear Power Plant in Japan into the ocean has begun.

According to the statement of the power plant operator Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), the second phase of treated wastewater discharge has started, the first of which was completed between August 24 and September 11.

Approximately 460 tons of wastewater per day will be released into the waters of the Pacific Ocean, 1 kilometer offshore, through the tunnel built below sea level.

The second phase of evacuation at the power plant is expected to take less than 3 weeks. With the discharges in the third and fourth phases, a total of 31 thousand 200 tons of wastewater will be discharged from the power plant until March 2024.

Following inspections at the power plant, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced in its final report at the beginning of July that the plan was compatible with safety standards.

The discharge plan provokes reaction from fishermen living in the region and environmental protection activists, as well as from neighboring countries, especially China.

The tsunami caused by the 9-magnitude earthquake that occurred in March 2011 caused damage to the Fukushima Subsidiary Nuclear Power Plant, and the area around the plant was declared an “evacuation zone” due to radioactive fallout.
