third phase of discharging wastewater from fukushima into the ocean has been completed

The third phase of discharging radioactive treated wastewater accumulated at the Fukushima Dai-i-i Nuclear Power Plant in Japan into the ocean has ended.

According to the statement of the plant operator Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), the third phase of wastewater discharge was completed, the first of which was between 24 August and 11 September and the second between 5 and 23 October.

In the third phase, covering November 2-20, 7,800 tons of processed wastewater was discharged 1 kilometer offshore through the tunnel built under the sea.

In line with the company’s planning, with the discharge in the fourth phase, a total of 31 thousand 200 tons of wastewater from the power plant will be discharged into the Pacific Ocean by March 2024.

In its final report published in July following inspections at the power plant, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that Japan’s wastewater discharge plan was compatible with safety standards.

The discharge plan provokes reaction from fishermen living in the region and environmental protection activists, as well as from neighboring countries, especially China.

The tsunami caused by the 9-magnitude earthquake that occurred in March 2011 caused damage to the Fukushima Subsidiary Nuclear Power Plant, and the area around the plant was declared an “evacuation zone” due to radioactive fallout.
