$37 Million to Be Invested in New Ship Repair Yard in Jamaica - News2Sea

Efforts are underway for the construction of a new ship repair yard in KINGSTON, Jamaica called the “German Ship Repair Jamaica Shipyard.” It is expected to begin operations by October or November 2023 and has already reported its first customer, a heavy lift Mexican vessel named “Mexican Giant.”

The shipyard will provide drydock services and a wide range of maintenance operations, handling vessels up to 20,000 tons and with enough berth space to accommodate ships up to 705 feet in length. The construction of the shipyard is expected to create well-paying jobs and attract foreign exchange to Jamaica.

The first phase of the project involves the development of the yard’s first drydock (JAM-Dock 1), the hiring and training of workers for the steel fabrication and engine workshops, and is expected to generate employment for 100 people.

KINGSTON’s location at a key junction for ships serving the Caribbean and Central America and passing through the Panama Canal, with around 3,000 port calls per year and 180,000 vessels operating in the area, was highlighted by the project’s sponsors and government officials.

The partners in the project are ship operator and owner Harren & Partner Group and ship supplier Kloska Group, both based in Germany, and working with the HAT-SAN shipyard in Turkey. All partners plan to invest $37 million in the development of the ship repair yard in Jamaica.
