The Naval Academy, which was founded in Kasımpaşa under the name of Mühendislikhane-i Bahr-i Hümayun by Admiral Algerian Gazi Hasan Pasha on 18 November 1773, operated here until 1834. The school was located at the Naval Barracks in Heybeliada the same year, and again in Kasımpaşa four years later, in what was then the Gazi Hasanpaşa Mansion and was prepared as an engineering building.

The school, which was transferred to Heybeliada again in 1851, continued its activities there until the end of World War I. After the Republic was declared, it was named Naval Academy and High School in 1928. II. The school moved to Mersin between 1941 and 1946 during World War II and started operating again in Heybeliada in 1946. The current campus in Tuzla was put into service on August 31, 1985. With the Decree Law No. 669 dated 25 July 2016, DHO was affiliated with the Rectorate of the National Defense University.

The defense of the Blue Homeland is entrusted to them.

The sailors of the future are being trained at the Naval Academy, which has been the main officer source of the Turkish Naval Forces for 250 years.

Trainings and achievements

Training boats and bridge simulators are used to reinforce students’ theoretical maritime knowledge with applications. A student who graduates from the military academy based on the vocational course program spends a minimum of 220 class hours in this simulator.

The theoretical knowledge learned during the academic year is applied on training boats and sailboats to prepare students for duty. The subjects covered theoretically in advanced maritime training and offshore training are reinforced and students’ familiarity with domestic and international ports is increased.

Before graduation, each student completes certified fire, wound defense and first aid training.

While the frogman basic course is conducted at the school by the Underwater Training Center Command, an average of 20 students successfully complete the course every year and are entitled to receive the Frogman Badge.

Students participate in social club activities based on their interests such as chess, cinema, theatre, music, naval history, ship modelling, ship technologies, mechatronics and robotics and cyber security.

Attention is paid to the optimal physical development of academic students. DHO has modern sports facilities, indoor and outdoor sports halls, indoor swimming pool, tennis courts and all kinds of sports training is given by specialized faculty members.

The school focuses on sea sports such as swimming, rowing and sailing, and teamwork in all branches, and also participates in domestic and international sports competitions.

Thanks to modern boathouse facilities and a fleet of 110 sailing boats and 80 rowing boats of various classes, 500 students can attend sea training at the same time.

DHO, which participates in all the races in the annual calendar of the Turkish Sailing and Rowing Federations, participated in 13 yacht races this year. Students who participated in each of them with at least four yachts won 7 first places, 4 second places, 4 third places and 3 fourth places.

Atatürk’s yacht Savarona is being repaired for the Navy

One of the important projects of the Naval Forces Command is the use of Atatürk’s yacht Savarona for the cruises of DHO students. Savarona, which was commissioned into the Naval Forces on 17 August, started dock repairs at the Ministry of National Defense Istanbul Shipyard Command on 19 September.

The maintenance and maintenance activities planned within the scope of putting the yacht back into service are planned to be completed in the summer of 2024.

The biggest dream of Naval Academy members is to carry out their open sea training as soon as possible on the ship, which is Atatürk’s spiritual legacy.
