converted from catamaran to aid ship

It was learned that the Karadeniz Lifeship Rauf Bey, sent to the region by Karadeniz Karpowership after the earthquake, was converted from the world’s largest catamaran.

Stena Explorer, the first of the three ships of the HSS 1500 project built in Finland in 1996, started to be used on the Holyhead-Dun Laohgaire line alternately for one season in February 1996.

The catamaran, which is 125 meters long and 40 meters wide, was used for holidays and travel under Stena Explorer between 1996 and 2009. It was subsequently acquired by Karadeniz Holding in 2015 and its name was changed to “One World Karadeniz”.

Transformation began with the earthquake

After the great earthquake that took place in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023 and affected 10 provinces, Karadeniz Powership rolled up its sleeves and transformed the catamaran and sent it to the region for aid under the name “Karadeniz Lifeship Rauf Bey”.

The ship, which was connected to Iskenderun Port and transformed into a small city where a total of 2 thousand people can live, has a nursery, education, health and a soup kitchen, as well as living spaces. The ship, which has 20 classrooms that can be used by over 500 students due to its modular system, a computer laboratory, an infirmary and a treatment area with a capacity of 20 beds, still serves as a school.
