It was reported that the number of people who lost their lives as a result of the boat capsizing in the Equateur province of the Democratic Republic of Congo yesterday increased to 47.

In his statement, Transport Minister Marc Ekila stated that the number of deaths increased as a result of the capsize of the boat, which left the port in Mbandaka town of Equateur at night and was heading towards Bolomba on the Congo River.

Minister Ekila announced that the number of people who lost their lives in the accident increased to 47.

Stating that search and rescue efforts are continuing, Ekila said that the accident occurred due to overload.

According to the news in the national press, approximately 190 people were rescued, and the search for 160 missing people continues.

It was stated that a few hours after take-off, the boat had difficulty moving forward due to overload, and during the crew’s attempt to balance, it tilted and sank completely.

According to initial findings, it was announced that 40 people lost their lives in the accident.

These types of maritime accidents, which occur especially during periods of intense seasonal rainfall, are caused by the lack of maintenance of the boats and their carrying of cargo and passengers beyond their capacity.
