Disabled students brought the 100 square meter Turkish flag placed at the bottom of the Golden Horn to the surface accompanied by diver police.

In cooperation with Bağcılar Municipality, General Directorate of Coastal Police, Coast Guard Command and Bandırma 17 Eylül University, the “100th Anniversary Republic Dive” was held at the campus of Istanbul Police Department Sea Port Branch Directorate in Balat.

At the event, disabled students and police divers entered the sea to retrieve the Turkish flag placed at the bottom of the Golden Horn.

The students, who brought the Turkish flag of approximately 100 square meters to the surface synchronously, unfurled the flag on the sea and were applauded for a long time.

Students, feeling the pride and happiness of accomplishing a challenging task, hugged their family members.

The event was watched with interest by citizens walking on the beach.

Disabled individuals felt the pride of accomplishing the difficult task

In his statement to the press before the dive, Bağcılar Mayor Abdullah Özdemir said that they wanted to organize an enthusiastic and beautiful event on the 100th anniversary of the Republic.

Stating that they celebrated the 100th anniversary with the diving event, Özdemir said, “Bağcılar Municipality Feyzullah Kıyıklık Palace for the Disabled is also the first underwater diving club and a center for the disabled. Hopefully, we will enter the Guinness Book of Records with our event of removing a 100 square meter flag from underwater.” said.

Alişan Keneş, one of the divers, stated that he went to all the activities and said, “It is a great feeling to take our Turkish flag out of the sea on the 100th anniversary of our Republic. Everything has its difficulties, but since we got used to it in training, it was not difficult.” he said.

Muhammet Ali Aktaş, one of the athletes, said: “Happy Republic Day. We took the flag out from underwater by diving.” he said.
