Canada has signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at establishing a green shipping corridor between Canada’s West Coast and ports in the United Arab Emirates, Korea and Japan.

A memorandum of understanding was signed for the ‘Western Green Transport Corridor’, which will connect Canada and Asia. The memorandum of understanding announcement was made by Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez on the margins of COP28.

The international, multi-port, multi-jurisdiction green shipping corridor will extend from Canada to major ports in Asia and the Middle East, including Prince Rupert, Vancouver and Edmonton.

In particular, this corridor, called the Western Green Freight Corridor, will have a unique geographical location. The shortest route from North America to Asia; low carbon technologies, carbon-neutral hub and net-zero containers, sprinter ships; The ships, which are faster, smaller and designed to travel back and forth between just two ports, will be produced in Canada using the most innovative zero-emission technologies and the distribution, use and export of clean fuels such as ammonia, hydrogen or methanol.

As explained, the memorandum of understanding reveals the power of partnerships across the maritime industry. Partners include indigenous groups, governments, shippers, shipbuilders, port and terminal operators, clean fuel producers and clean technology companies. All parties agreed to work together to develop this corridor.

Canada’s Minister of Transport said, “We will continue to work together for a greener, more sustainable future. Through this memorandum of understanding, we are leveraging our will, investments and momentum from our partners to ensure the global maritime industry is safe, reliable and sustainable. The net future is one for zero.” “We’re setting a route.” he said. (7Sea)
