New port project for Biga - News2Sea

The new port project aims to alleviate the maritime transportation burden in Bandırma district of Balıkesir.

The port project, which will be built on the site of the existing port in the Karabiga town of Çanakkale’s Biga district and is expected to be included in the 2024 investment program, is expected to alleviate the maritime transportation burden in Balıkesir’s Bandırma district.

Ground drilling in the sea and surveying on land for the new port project to be implemented by the state in the town of Karabiga, located in the south of the Marmara Sea, have been completed. Within the scope of the project, whose Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process is ongoing, a customs port, a sea bus docking ramp, a marina with a capacity of 40-50 people, social areas and a fishing shelter will be built on the 1.5-kilometer coastline.

Karabiga Mayor Ahmet Elbi said that after the drilling works at sea, the feasibility of the port was decided and the project was prepared.

Stating that ships of maximum 3 thousand tons can dock at the current port in the town, Elbi said:

“The port in Bandırma is no longer sufficient for the region. Such a need arose. After our port is completed, ships of 10 thousand tons will be able to dock. “A breakwater of 900 meters long and 50 meters wide will be created at the entrance of Karabiga.”

Elbi stated that there will also be an area in the port where luxury yachts can dock and stay during the winter months, as well as sea bus docking ramps.

Explaining that the purse seiners approaching Karabiga wait in line because they do not have a place to unload the fish they catch, and sometimes they have to approach very tightly, Elbi said, “With this project, they will now have a separate place. He will be able to keep the fish he catches or immediately auction and sell them. We are increasing the capacity of our fishing shelter. “After our project is completed, our current area will have increased 6 times.” said.

Stating that they will build a huge back square area and plan to build a place with luxury cafes and fish restaurants, Elbi added that Karabiga’s center will gain a lot of value and will attract serious visitors from outside, which is why they attach importance to the project.
