A fishing competition was held in Mersin by Akkuyu Nükleer AŞ within the scope of the 100th anniversary of the Republic.

For the organization, 12 fishermen came together at Boğsak Port in the morning.

Participants were informed about the competition rules and set out to sea in groups on boats at sunrise.

Fishermen casting their fishing rods into the blue waters of the Mediterranean struggled to catch the biggest and most fish.

At the end of the organization, which lasted approximately 5 hours, radiation measurements of the caught fish were made.

In the competition, the blue team consisting of Veli Bıçak and İsmail Tuğ, who caught the most fish with 15 kilos 890 grams, came first.

Veli Bıçak became the fisherman who caught the biggest fish of the event with the 810 gram bonito he caught.

At the ceremony held after the competition, the winners were given their awards.

Silifke District Governor Abdullah Aslaner, in his speech, said that he attaches great importance to radiation measurement of caught fish.

Stating that it was a nice event, Aslaner said:

“It is nice to eat fish here, but I care more about the radiation measurement part of this event. Such events are very important so that we can both swim safely and eat the products from the sea safely. I would like to thank everyone who organized this event. I congratulate the winners.”

Akkuyu Nükleer AŞ Port Manager Okan Bozkurt reminded that the first fishing event in the region where Akkuyu NPP was built was held in 2014 and said:

“It has become traditional as of 2021. Nuclear energy is an environmentally clean source of electricity and does not harm the environment. Therefore, the water around the nuclear power plant is suitable both for swimming in the sea and for the living environment of the fish we catch today and will catch when Akkuyu NPP is put into operation. Akkuyu NPP “Very modern hydrotechnical structures that envisage the establishment of fish protection barriers are being built at the construction site.”
