The world's only floating power plant is in its 4th year of energy production - News2Sea

4 years have passed since the world’s only floating power plant, Akademik Lomonosov, was connected to the grid of the autonomous Chaun-Bilibino energy center in Western Chukotka.

Power, one of the respected magazines, described the connection of the first floating nuclear power plant to the grid in 2019 as one of the most important events of the year in the field of nuclear energy. The following year, the floating nuclear power plant was awarded a prestigious award as the best nuclear power plant of 2020 at the Asian Energy Awards.

On December 19, the planned maintenance of the first reactor of the floating nuclear power plant Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit was also completed. This year, maintenance activities aimed at improving reactor reliability and safety included the first-ever safe refueling of the floating nuclear power plant located in the main port of the city of Pevek. In 2024, maintenance work will be carried out, including refueling the reactor on the left side of Akademik Lomonosov.

The floating nuclear thermal power plant, which is a project of Rosenergoatom, the electrical energy division of the Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation Rosatom, has provided approximately 722 million kW/hour of electricity to the Chaun-Bilibino energy center grid of the Chukotka Autonomous Region since its connection to the grid.

Director of the floating nuclear power plant, Viktor Elagin, said: “Today, the floating power plant continues to create favorable conditions for the economic development of the Chaunsky and Bilibinsky districts of Chukotka. “We currently meet more than 55% of the needs of the entire autonomous energy center, and when the production of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant (NGP) is taken into account, we can say that the share of nuclear production reaches 88%.”

The floating power plant also serves as an energy base for full-scale production in the main deposits of the Baimsk ore district in the region. Consumers of the floating power plant’s energy include Peschanka, which is the largest deposit and forms the basis of the promising Baimsky mining and processing plant.
