world’s first fully electric pusher boats and barges deployed for cocoa bean transport

Dutch-based towage company Kotug International has partnered with Switzerland-based freight trader Cargill to launch their groundbreaking fully electric pusher boats and barges, known as the E-Pusher and E-Barges. These innovative vessels will be utilized for transporting cocoa beans from the port of AMSTERDAM to Cargill’s cocoa factory in Zaandam, Netherlands.

The boats will derive their energy from a wind farm operated by Windpark Hanze in collaboration with Cargill and Vattenfall, ensuring a sustainable power source for their operations.

These zero-emission vessels represent a significant milestone in environmental sustainability, as they effectively eliminate harmful emissions such as Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Sulphur Oxides (SOx), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), and particulate matter. It is estimated that CO2 emissions will be reduced by approximately 190,000 kilograms annually using these pusher boats and barges.

On June 9th, Cargill became the world’s first company to deploy fully electric pusher boats and barges for inland shipping.

Ard-Jan Kooren, President & CEO of KOTUG, emphasized that the introduction of these world-first zero-emission vessels aims to inspire other shipping companies, governments, and stakeholders to embrace clean energy solutions. Through such collective efforts, significant progress can be made toward achieving global climate goals and ensuring a better future for generations to come.
