12th National Ship and Yacht Design Competition concluded

“12th International” organized every year by the Ship Yacht and Services Exporters Association National Ship and Yacht Design Competition has concluded.

23 students from different universities competed with 10 projects on the final night of the competition, which has been held regularly every year since 2012 and this year’s theme was “Catamaran Touring Boat”.

University designers received their awards at the award ceremony of the competition, where the subject was “Catamaran Touring Boat”. The project named “Hoopoe” by Yıldız Technical University and Maltepe University students was deemed worthy of the first prize.

The award ceremony of the competition was attended by Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) President Mustafa Gültepe, Coastal Police General Manager Mustafa Bankaoğlu, Shipyards Deputy General Manager Taner Keskin, GYHİB Chairman of the Board Cem Seven, Chamber of Shipping Deputy Chairman Recep Düzgit, İMEAK Chamber of Shipping (DTO). Parliament Speaker Başaran Bayrak, presidents of maritime non-governmental organizations, presidents of exporters’ associations, sector representatives and academicians attended.

Our industry will close the year with an export of nearly 2 billion dollars

In the opening speech of the award ceremony, TİM President Mustafa Gültepe started his speech by explaining that maritime has an important place in our history and culture. Noting that the export success of the Ship, Yacht and Services sector has positive reflections on general exports, Gültepe pointed out that there was a big jump in the exports of the sector this year.

Gültepe continued his words as follows:

“In 2022, the exports of the Ship, Yacht and services sector were 1.5 billion dollars. This year, it reached 1.7 billion dollars in 11 months. When we look at the 11-month data, the sector appears to have increased by 36 percent compared to last year. “We will close the year with an export of nearly 2 billion dollars.”

Nearly 1000 students participated in the competition, which has been held for 12 years.

Cem Seven, President of the Ship, Yacht and Services Exporters’ Association, in his opening speech of the ceremony, stated that their goal with the competition is to instill innovation and design culture in young people who are the future of the sector, and to bring talented students to the sector, and stated that nearly 1000 students have participated in the competition, which has been held for 12 years, so far.

Seven said, “Our workforce quality is our strongest field in international competition. Design is an important concept that is one of the basic elements of the ship and yacht construction industry. With the National Ship and Yacht Design Competitions we have organized every year since the establishment of our Association, we bring together sustainability, innovation, engineering skills and aesthetic elements and try to ensure that our competitors bring a new vision to themselves and our industry. “We aim to provide gains in both our workforce and design culture,” he said.

“By the end of the year, we will be at the top of the sectors that increase exports the most in Turkey.”

Association President Seven evaluated Turkey’s ship and yacht exports and stated that GYHİB reached the highest export amount since its establishment in 2010. Seven continued his words: “We have left behind 1 billion 626 million dollars, which is our highest annual export amount since 2010, when the Ship Yacht and Services Exporters Association was established.

By the end of the year, we will be at the top of the sectors that increased exports the most in Turkey. We are extremely proud to be able to break new records almost every year on behalf of our institution, which represents the export leg of our industry and operates to solve the problems of our exporting companies.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all stakeholders of the ship and yacht building industry, who contributed to these records, for participating and supporting every event within the scope of the export and promotion vision we have put forward.”

The award ceremony witnessed great excitement

As a result of the evaluation of the competition jury, Yıldız Technical University and Maltepe University students Bora Kadıoğlu, Muhammet İnci and Ömer Özcan won first place with their project named “Hoopoe”; Oğuzhan Smart and Burakcan Yelek, students of Istanbul Technical University and Maltepe University, came second with their project named “Elite”; Yıldız Technical University students Yasin Karakuş and Hasan Eroğlu were deemed worthy of third place with their project named “Zada”.

Among the winning designers in the competition, cash prizes of 120 thousand TL were given to the first place, 80 thousand TL to the second place, and 60 thousand TL to the third place.

In the jury of the competition; A delegation of 9 people, consisting of Bülent Hüseyinoğlu, Oral Erdoğan, Necdet Salgür, Esra Özalp, Mustafa İnsel, Elif Yıldırım Kapucu, H. Bülent Şener, Tanju Kalaycıoğlu and Yusuf Turhan Soyaslan, took part. The projects were evaluated according to the criteria of innovation, contribution to the sector, applicability, domestic contribution rate, environmentalism and quality of presentation.

In National Ship and Yacht Design Competitions, unlike other design competitions, there is a requirement for at least 1 shipbuilding-naval machinery or naval marine technologies engineering student to take part in the groups. Not only design but also engineering calculations are required from the projects applying to the competition.

At the end of the award ceremony, it was announced that the subject of the design competition to be held in 2024 will be “Fishing Vessel Design”.
