It was announced that 652 irregular immigrants were rescued during the operations carried out on the eastern coast of Tunisia.

The General Administration of the Tunisian National Guard published a written statement on the issue.

According to the statement, naval forces prevented 23 irregular migration attempts off the coast of Sfax city in the east of the country.

Security units responding to calls for help rescued 652 irregular immigrants, 242 of whom were Tunisians and 410 of whom were from Sub-Saharan African countries.

The statement also stated that migrant boats were sunk at sea and that the prosecutor’s office allowed an investigation into the matter.

Every year, thousands of African irregular immigrants come to Tunisia, which borders Libya and Algeria, to reach Europe via the Mediterranean in the hope of a better life.

Lampedusa Island, Italy’s closest landmass to North Africa, located on the irregular migration route in the Central Mediterranean, is approximately 130 kilometers away from the Tunisian coast.

Sfax, Tunisia, stands out among the places where irregular migrants frequently come in their efforts to reach Lampedusa.

An “emergency” was declared on the island, where irregular immigrants frequently attempt to cross to Europe, as more than 6 thousand immigrants arrived in 36 hours.
