Approximately 500 square meters of waste fishing nets called “ghost nets” were removed from the sea in Bodrum district of Muğla.

74-year-old Mehmet Baş, the last sponge diver in the district known as “Aksona Mehmet”, and his accompanying sailors worked to clean the nets left on the seabed by fishermen and damaging the ecosystem.

Baş and his entourage went out to sea on the boat named “Axona Mancorna” and dived.

Waste nets, which were described as “ghosts” because they were difficult to see on the seabed during diving, were collected. Approximately 500 square meters of fishing nets brought to shore were taken to be destroyed by the municipality’s cleaning teams.

The last sponge diver Baş told journalists that the nets left on the seabed were killing life in the water.

Stating that he does the cleaning every year, Baş said, “The seas are our bread and butter. We need to protect our seas just as we avoid garbage.” said.

Baş stated that they removed the nets from a depth of approximately 40 meters and thanked the businessman Mustafa Güneri who supported them in this work.

Stating that he was the child of a captain from Bodrum, Güneri said, “My father was a sponge diver for years and was one of the first to initiate the blue voyage. This is our duty of loyalty to the seas. I invite everyone to support such events.” he said.
