The October Assembly Meeting of the Istanbul and Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Sea Regions (IMEAK) Chamber of Shipping (DTO) was held on Thursday, October 5, 2023, in the Chamber’s Assembly Hall.

At the meeting held under the chairmanship of Parliament Speaker Başaran Bayrak, the items on the agenda were discussed.

Tamer Kıran, Chairman of the Board of Directors of IMEAK Chamber of Shipping, started his speech by condemning the terrorist attack on the General Directorate of Security of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Ankara last Sunday. Tamer Kıran expressed his best wishes to the security guards and the Ministry of Internal Affairs who were injured in the attack, and wished God’s mercy to the veterinary health technicians martyred by the terrorists in Kayseri before the attack, and said that Turkey has come a long way against the separatist terrorism problem, which has caused heavy costs for 40 years. He pointed out that he wholeheartedly believes that our security forces will continue to fight against terrorism with determination and determination and will thwart the treacherous plans against our country.

Evaluating economic issues, Tamer Kıran stated that it was seen that the risk appetite in the global economy started to decrease in September, and that while the global economy continued to slow down on the one hand, and on the other hand, the decline in inflation was not at the desired pace, the main reasons for this decline were the central banks’ continued determination in tight monetary policy, especially the American Central Bank Fed. He noted that it appeared as.

Tamer Kıran pointed out that oil prices, which have increased by more than 30% in the last three months, and natural gas prices, which have increased by nearly 20%, have started to increase concerns about inflation again in the coming period. Tamer Kıran stated that oil prices, in particular, continued their upward movement due to the supply cuts of major producing states and the relatively strong growing US economy depleting oil stocks more than expected, and stated that the global slowdown and the problems in China also had the potential to brake the increase rate of oil.

Looking at the Turkish economy, Tamer Kıran pointed out that while domestic demand maintains a certain strength, a strong recovery has not yet been observed in external demand, and said, “The interest rate increases of the Central Bank in the last two months have started to reduce the consumption tendency by rapidly increasing both loan and deposit interest rates. We need to wait for this process to continue in terms of our macroeconomic balances. “The importance of export-supporting policies has become much greater in order to maintain growth and employment dynamics.” he said.

Tamer Kıran noted that although the high inflation environment showed significant increases in turnover and profitability in nominal values, inflation-adjusted real values ​​showed that the growth in turnover and profitability was much more limited, and said:

“We are going through a difficult economic period that affects our country as well as the rest of the world. In such a critical period, we find the Medium Term Program (MTP) covering the period 2024-2026, announced by our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, very valuable. First of all, we observe that the program, which was prepared in close consultation with the business world, was interpreted positively by the world financial circles. As a matter of fact, some international organizations announce that they have updated their growth forecasts for the Turkish economy upwards. “I would like to reiterate once again my belief that success will be achieved as a result of the successful implementation of the program.”

Stating that Piri Reis University attracted great interest from students this year, Tamer Kıran stated that a total of 1583 students were enrolled in the new academic year, and as of today, the number of students has reached 6771.

Reminding that Expomaritt Exposhipping Istanbul, the only maritime and shipbuilding fair supported by our Chamber with the “Exposhipping” name right, will be held in October at the Istanbul Expo Center (IFM) in Yeşilköy, between 11-14 October, Tamer Kıran said that all members will attend the events. invited to participate and visit the fair.

Reminding that the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey will be celebrated in October, Tamer Kıran said that, as the Chamber, they are preparing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of our Republic with great enthusiasm.

In this context, Tamer Kıran stated that they formed a committee consisting of 1 Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors and 3 Board Members and listed the celebration activities that will be held for 1 year starting from October 29, 2023 as follows:

“First of all, we will participate in the official celebration program to be held on October 29 under the coordination of our Istanbul Governorship. In this context, the boats and marine vehicles of our Chamber members will also take part in the Istanbul Bosphorus Crossing cortege, which will be held under the leadership of ships affiliated with our Naval Forces Command.

Our preparations are still continuing for the 100th Anniversary Reception to be held by our Chamber on a date after October 29th.

Then, one of the following Assembly meetings of our Chamber is planned to be held in Ankara and Anıtkabir will be visited with all our Assembly members.

In the next year, composition, painting and photography competitions will be held with the participation of maritime high schools with the theme of the 100th Anniversary, and joint conferences and events will be organized with Piri Reis University. Our Cabotage Day on July 1, 2024 will be celebrated with the theme of the 100th Anniversary.”
