British shipbuilder and manufacturer Harland & Wolff has signed a contract with Canadian oil and gas company Cenovus Energy for the mid-life upgrade of its SeaRose floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel.

The 2004-built unit, which first arrived in Belfast in 2012, will return in the first quarter of 2024 and will be on scaffolding for more than three months.

Work has already begun, including inspections, steel procurement, fabrication of customized blocks and other dry dock operations.

It is estimated that around 1,000 personnel, including company staff and subcontractors, will be working on the ship at its peak.

John Wood, CEO of Harland & Wolff Group Holdings, said: “This is a significant acquisition within our non-defense portfolio from a global, world-class energy group. I am pleased that we have established a reputation as the go-to shipyard for large and complex programmes.”
