Istanbul Sailing Club opened Turkey’s first sailing museum in Kalamış.

The museum, which was created as a result of intense efforts by the Istanbul Sailing Club (IYK) and reveals another dimension of devotion to sailing, was opened in Kadıköy Kalamış. Kadıköy Mayor Şerdil Dara Odabaşı also attended the opening.

About the Istanbul Sailing Club Museum, which was opened in October, the club management said, “We are honored to realize this meaningful museum, which will allow us to witness our sailing history and carry our values to the next generations, in the 100th year of our Republic and the 71st year of Istanbul Sailing Club, in the place marked by our Ancestor.” “And we are happy,” he said.

Full support from former sailors to the museum

The team formed under the leadership of Club President Billur Arıkan and Board Member Deniz Akyıldız first classified the valuable works to be exhibited among the historical objects in the club facilities. Then, the pieces collected from club members who wanted to donate to the museum were evaluated. At this stage, Seyhun Binzet, one of the past presidents of IYK, added many objects from his collection to the museum inventory.

The museum exhibits awards, documents, photographs and various objects from sailing races during the Ottoman period, the Republican period and the 71-year history of the club following its establishment. In addition, some special materials gifted to the club by our navy over the years and donations from members are among the items in the museum. From the trophy belonging to the 18th century Prinkipo Races to the handwritten postcards sent by Sadun Boro, the first Turkish sailor to sail around the world, from the ‘Star’ boat in which the club’s founders and Turkey’s first sailors to participate in the Olympics raced in 1936, to the glorious ‘Yavuz’ of our navy. Many original parts and documents, including the porthole of the battleship, are waiting for its visitors.

The ‘Sailing Racing Rules’ booklet, prepared in three languages with his own handwriting and drawings by Orhan Akra, who helped establish Turkey’s first sailing school within the club, is one of the valuable works in the museum.

Istanbul Sailing Club Museum is open to visitors every day except Mondays.
