sailing boat sank in mersin

In Mersin’s Erdemli district, the sailboat crashed into the rocks and sank due to the effects of the waves and wind after its engine stopped.

The engine of the US-flagged sailboat named “Lotus”, captained by A.Y., stopped at the entrance of the Tırtar District marina. The boat, which was damaged by the wind and hitting the rocks, sank into the water with a small part of it remaining above. Captain AY and one person with him left by boat before the boat sank.

Upon the application of the survivors, teams from the Coast Guard Command were directed to the region.

The teams, in cooperation with local fishermen, started working to pull the boat to the shore.

The boat, to which one of the divers had tied a rope, was brought to the Erdemli Fisherman’s Shelter after about 5 hours of work with the help of the fishing boat and was removed from the sea with the help of a crane.

Mersin Fisheries Cooperative Regional Union Vice President Yalçın Sakın, who participated in the rescue efforts, told reporters that the 12-meter-long sailboat, which was about to enter the marina at noon, crashed into the rocks and sank due to the effect of the wave and wind after its engine stopped.

Sakın said, “The two people on the boat escaped by boarding the boat with their own means. When the surviving friends reported it, the Coast Guard Command asked for help from us. We directed one of the boats operating in the open sea. We brought the sailboat to the Erdemli Fishing Shelter. There were no deaths or injuries on the boat.” said.
