sea creatures are changing their habitats due to climate change

Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University (NKÜ) Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Biology Department Lecturer Prof. Dr. Deniz Şirin said that there are changes in the habitats of some marine creatures due to the increase in temperature.

In his statement, Şirin stated that climate change also negatively affects marine creatures.

Stating that sea water temperatures have increased by approximately 1.5 degrees in the Mediterranean and 0.5 degrees in the Black Sea in the last 100 years, Şirin emphasized that the change in water temperatures causes the marine ecosystem to deteriorate and living species to be affected to different degrees.

Explaining that the distribution and life cycles of some fish species have changed and they have become more susceptible to diseases, Şirin continued as follows:

“The Climate Change and Seas Report of the Turkish Marine Research Foundation contains very striking examples. In this report, the frequent occurrence of species such as sardines, kupes and sarpas living in the Mediterranean, which were rare in the Black Sea and Marmara 20 years ago, is associated with the increase in sea water temperature. Another The emergence of the sunfish, a fish species, from the south of the Mediterranean to the Marmara Sea is explained by the effects of global warming. In addition to the fish species, the sea urchin species, which is an invertebrate, has started to be seen intensively in the North Aegean and the Marmara Sea, again due to faunal change due to global climate change. is pointing.”

Şirin pointed out that species suitable for living in the Mediterranean began to gradually spread to the Northern Aegean, Marmara and even the Black Sea as the sea water warmed.

It also causes algae blooms

Stating that the increase in temperature in the seas also causes algae blooms, Şirin stated that many living creatures are affected by this situation and said:

“Algal blooms occur when substances such as nitrogen or phosphorus enter the water system and cause excessive algae growth. These blooms can prevent sunlight from reaching other living things, and can also reduce the oxygen level in the water and cause harmful effects with the accumulation of organic molecules in the water. This situation can cause harmful effects in the water source. “It can affect the entire ecosystem. As a result, it may cause fish deaths or interruption of water resources.”
