Sri Lanka detained 14 Indian fishermen for allegedly poaching.

Sri Lanka Navy detained 14 Indian fishermen for allegedly illegally fishing in the country’s territorial waters.

According to the news of India Today website, Sri Lanka Navy elements detained 14 Indian fishermen who were allegedly illegally fishing off the coast of the Jaffna region of the country.

Authorities also seized the fishermen’s boats.

With the latest operation, the number of Indian fishermen detained in Sri Lanka in 2023 increased to 240 and the number of boats seized increased to 35.

The problem of poaching between India and Sri Lanka has been going on for a long time.

Sri Lankan Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda, in his statement in Parliament last week, stated that a high-level diplomatic solution with India was needed.
