The General Directorate of Maritime Affairs made a statement regarding the sinking of the Guniea-Bissau flagged ship JOE 2, carrying 3000 tons of bauxite ore to Ukraine and having 14 crew members of Syrian nationality, in Finike.

The explanation is as follows:

“From the investigation of the EPIRB signal received from the Cospat Sarsat system at 04:22, it was understood that the Guniea-Bissau flagged ship JOE 2, carrying 3000 tons of bauxite ore from Iskenderun to Ukraine, with a crew of 14 Syrian nationals, started to sink by taking water off Finike.

Under the coordination of AAKKM, Turkish Radio started its calls for the ships in the region to participate in search and rescue, and the naval and air elements of the Naval Forces Command and the Coast Guard Command were assigned to the scene.

Two of the crew of the ship, which was understood to be completely sunk, were rescued by the Coast Guard Command helicopter, and three survivors were retrieved from the sea by commercial ships. Search and rescue efforts for 9 victims continue.”
