The first speech at the meeting was made by Müsemma Sabancıoğlu, the historian who prepared the book for publication. In his speech, Sabancıoğlu said; Stating that they focused on field research in Anatolia and Thrace among many leading scientists working in different disciplines within the scope of the project, he said, “What was effective in this decision were the questions about the possibilities that looking at the history of the Republic in this light could provide. How was it possible for a woman to go to a place in Anatolia, for example, in the 1930s and 1940s, in a country with very limited resources? What paths did these women travel, what obstacles did they overcome? How they got to their destination was one question, where they stayed was another. What did the questions they pursued in their studies show about Turkey, and where and what did these studies correspond to in the larger framework of the scientific world? What traces of the founding years of the Republic’s history could be found in the work of these women? In its simplest form, what was behind the curiosity, patience, effort and courage that took a woman out of her home and to places she had never known before? She stated that answers to the questions are being sought.

President of the Science Academy Prof. Dr. Canan Atılgan said, “As a woman of the Republic, beyond Atatürk, who were the ones who paved the way for me and made the extraordinary ordinary? Of course, there were women who I looked up to and guided me throughout my education and professional life, but there were missing pieces in the story. The compilation process of this project and book, which started with the name ‘Science and Women in the Republic’, showed me the missing pieces; “It brought to light what was a secret for me, at least to some extent,” he said.
