the world’s largest sailing cargo ship was introduced

The company named Berge Bulk introduced its new cargo ship called Berge Olympus.

Sustainability has long been a topic on which significant money and time has been spent. At this point, logistics companies, especially maritime transportation companies, are trying to offer different alternatives. One of these companies is Berge Bulk.

And now, a remarkable move has come from this company. Berge Bulk introduced its state-of-the-art cargo ship called “Berge Olympus”. This massive cargo ship uses the same sails used on much smaller yachts. Berge Bulk believes that it can ensure sustainability in the logistics industry with the technology used in its new ship.

Berge Bulk’s new ship, Berge Olympus, unlike other ships, has sail-like structures called BARTech WindWings, developed by Yara Marine Technologies. In this way, the ship was made much more environmentally friendly.

Sails, which have been used for a long time throughout history, are of course not a revolution in themselves, but these structures called WindWings work differently than normal sails. It uses wind power not to create propulsion like ships of the past, but to charge electric batteries. Thus, they aim to reduce the carbon footprint and fuel consumption of ships.

The first journey will be between Brazil and China

Berge Olympus’ maiden voyage will be between Brazil and China. The reason why this route was chosen is that the sea route between the two countries is very efficient in terms of wind. Thus, sails can be used more efficiently.

Each sail has a width of 20 meters and a height of 37.5 meters. The wings of the A380, the world’s largest passenger plane, are one-third the size of the WindWing. According to the statement made by the company, Berge Olympus will save 6 tons of fuel per trip on a standard international route. In other words, on average, there is a 20% fuel saving per trip. Moreover, this way, 19.5 tons of carbon emissions per day are prevented. (Web Techno)
