Waste retention barriers were placed in Van Lake - News2Sea

Waste retention barriers were placed at the mouths of the streams in order to protect the Van Lake ecosystem and prevent domestic waste from reaching the lake.

Van Metropolitan Municipality has implemented many projects to prevent possible pollution in Lake Van. In addition to important projects such as the Van Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Facility, integrated solid waste facility and bottom sludge, Van Metropolitan Municipality also takes precautions in the streams flowing directly into the lake, and in this context, installed waste retention systems in the streams. By preventing domestic waste from reaching the lake through streams, Van Lake is kept cleaner.

Waste catcher systems established by the Metropolitan Municipality Environmental Protection and Control Department are cleaned by district municipalities at regular intervals. With the waste catcher systems installed at the points where Akköprü and Kurubaş streams meet Lake Van, the waste in the stream is collected before it reaches the lake.

In addition, domestic waste such as plastic pets, bottles, bags, metal pieces, cigarette butts, masks and gloves carried with the stream waters are collected by the teams and sorted in the integrated solid waste facility.
